The violent and unsettling arrest of Eddie Alvarez at Chicano Park, San Diego, caused immediate outrage in the community. He’s seen being pushed around and pinned down by a gang of cops, arguably, our generous viewers might still describe them as a group of law enforcement officials. The arrest of the man, late Thursday, sparked an hours-long protest outside the San Diego Police Department (SDPD).
The protest was being live streamed on the Facebook page of Party for Socialism and Liberation – San Diego (PSL), they identified the man being a beaten to be as Eddie Alvarez. Alvarez, 22, is considered an active community member, part of Brown Berets of Azatlan, a local group who observe police activity in the Chicano Park area, according to the PSL Facebook page. The Facebook post also claims that SDPD Central Division is actively provoking them since an incident on May 1, when police escorted an allegedly racist group through Chicano Park area.
Audra Stafford, reporting outside the SDPD for NBC 7, was still awaiting any further details after San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said that Alvarez faces a felony charge of obstructing and resisting an officer, and a misdemeanor for resisting an officer. He is being held on $20,000 bail.
As the protesters outside of the police station were heard chanting in support of Alvarez and other anti-police brutality chants. SDPD, however, said it would not comment on the incident.
