Officers in Madisonville, OH were responding to a 911-call from the suspect describing himself
This Thursday, Police officers in Madisonville, Ohio shot 23-year-old Devin Johnson in a Park on Bramble Avenue. Officers Albert Brown and Kevin Brown in Cincinnati Police Department District 2 were responding to a 911 call about a ‘knife-weilding man’ in the Bramble Park. Cincinnati PD released the body cam footage from both officers, earlier in the day.
Officer Albert shot the suspect three times after warning him to drop the knife. The suspect, Johnson, was critically injured and taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where it’s reported that he stabilized on Saturday.
Chief of Police Eliot Isaac said in his Friday press conference that the suspect was “acting erratically” and walked “deliberately” towards the officers despite their warnings.
Cincinnati police said Johnson had made the 911-call describing himself as a suspect. Devin Johnson has a history of mental illness, although his criminal records were found to be clean.
“There’s a man with a knife acting wild,” Johnson said to a 911 dispatcher. “He’s just going crazy.”
“I can’t speak to his state of mind or his mindset, but he was very— Chief of Police Eliot Isaac
clearlyintent on engaging the officers,” Isaac said. “A knife is a deadly weapon. An officer absolutely had the right to defend himself.”
No charges were filed against the officers, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said in a release Saturday. He said that after Johnson did not follow the officers’ orders, they had “every right to use deadly force.” While Johnson has been charged with felonious assault and aggravated menacing, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Facts From the Past
Kevin Brown, the later one shown stepping out his cruiser, is the officer who shot an 11-year-old girl with a stun gun in a Kroger shoplifting incident earlier this year. Despite the mechanics of the incident, it should be apparent that police officers should have the training to deal with mentally-impaired suspect.
